Espeller, act. acut. Tantost est composé de Es prepos. privative, et Peller, qui vient de Pellis, et non de Pilus Latin, et signifie escorcher, oster ou arracher la peau ou l'escorce, Corticem seu pellem detrahere, Cortice seu pelle nudare. Tantost est un verbe corrompu de la mignardise de la prononciation du vulgaire, pour Appeller, et le conviendroit escrire Eppeller, car les Latins dient Appellare literas, (qui est le terme du precepteur qui monstre à lire aux enfants) c'est à dire, nommer chasque lettre par son nom pour en faire une syllabe. Et ainsi en use Quintilien.
